Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup onion finely chopped
  • ½ cup bell pepper finely chopped (red or green)
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes optional, for heat

For Assembly:

  • 4 hamburger buns toasted
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or cheese of choice
  • 2 tablespoons butter for toasting buns

Instructions
 

Step 1: Sauté the Aromatics

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add onions and bell peppers and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds, until fragrant.

Step 2: Cook the Chicken

  • Add ground chicken to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  • Drain excess liquid if needed.

Step 3: Make the Sloppy Joe Sauce

  • Reduce heat to medium-low and add tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  • Stir well and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.

Step 4: Add the Cheese

  • Sprinkle shredded cheese over the mixture and stir until melted and fully incorporated.

Step 5: Assemble the Sloppy Joes

  • Spread butter on the cut sides of the buns and toast them in a skillet until golden brown.
  • Spoon the cheesy chicken mixture onto the toasted buns.
